The original system numbers the child’s 20 primary teeth in the same order and places a small letter “d” after each number to show deciduous (primary) teeth. The modified version of the Universal Numbering System for children which is now used by most dentists and insurance companies, however, uses the letters A to T instead of 1 to 20.
